Week 8 - Stash Report

This is embarrassing! Oh, well, like bitter tonic, it's best just to do it quickly and get it over with!

I'll do the easy part first: One old FQ for a friend -- .25 yard.

Now the hard part. There is a plan for all of them, but still in all, purchases are purchases and must be reported.

In January at Road to CA, I purchased a kit to make the American Pinwheel quilt. The quilt is 47x60, and I wanted to make it bigger. I think this quilt will be perfect either on the sofa or on the bed during patriotic holidays. I searched and searched in my meager stash of patriotics and nothing worked. This quilt has really small pieces in it and my fabrics all had either designs that were too large or the reds were too "red". At Ginger's this week I picked up three FQs that would work in the quilt from the Old Glory III line by Windham. Then yesterday Jane and I headed over to Stars & Scraps in Corona CA right before they closed for the day, and I was able to find some half yard cuts and FQs of the original fabric in the kit. I'm good to go on this quilt. It will be lots of teeny piecing, but I'm up to the task! That's 7 yards total to enlarge this quilt. I probably won't use all of it. Then I found an end-of-bolt of 4.75 yards to back it, and can use the leftovers from the front to make it size up correctly.

Stars & Scraps had a few pieces of Wildrose fabric left, and I found a piece big enough to back the Moda U kit that I had gotten from The Fat Quarter Shop last year. Now that one is good to go, too. Backing purchased - 5 yards.

I discovered a kit upstairs in the stash room that I purchased at the old Fabric Patch a couple of years ago. I was going to start piecing it this week, but I'm helping out a friend instead so that was put aside. It used some older 3 Sisters fabric, and I found an end-of-bolt at Ginger's this week for the backing that was the same fabric as the borders on that quilt, so it followed me home. 5 yards purchased.

I've been thinking about quilts for my brother's home. They lost everything in the fire in 2006, and even though the house is rebuilt and refurnished, they need bed quilts. I'm going to start with the guest rooms, and will make the master bedroom quilt after I've visited this fall and seen Gail's decor. I found a kit at The Fat Quarter Shop that will work perfectly in one of the guest rooms. They must be sold out of it so I can't link it, but it's an RJR kit called Stars of Provence and uses the Provence fabric line. Soft medium blues and creams. It'll be perfect for "my bedroom" in South Louisiana! The total kit, including backing, totals 19.75 yards.

Gulp! BUT I now have four projects ready to piece and finish. That's a good thing, right? LOL.

Also arriving at the house this week was the first month in the Blossom Time BOM. This is another perfectly gorgeous Anne Sutton, Bunny Hill Designs quilt. I'm not counting BOMs that were ordered before January 1st. A technicality for sure, but that's what I decided to do. If any of them get finished this year, then I'll add and bust the yardage at that time.

Year-to-Date Totals:

Busted: 113.50 yards
Purchased: 69.25 yards
Net YTD: 44.25 yards busted!

Thanks Vicky for the American Pinwheel Quilt pattern idea. I didn't know that existed and I love it! Can't wait to see yours, now to go to my stash. Nancy in WI

I love the fabrics you chose for your American Pinwheel Quilt. The quilt is beautiful, but I would want it larger, too.

I don't think you did horrible this week. It sounds like you bought fabrics so you could finish some projects.

I love your new fabrics and think the are a well-deserved treat for all of the fabric that you have busted this year! I think this whole exercise is about learning to think about what we buy and why we buy it. Just developing the habit of thinking about it will save us from buying the "just because I deserve it" purchases.

That's not too bad...you have plans for all the fabric you purchased and that is a good thing!! It is also good to know that I am in good company...I too made some purchases this week..smile.

The pinwheel fabric looks good. Don't be so hard on yourself. You have busted over 44 yards....yes, yards of fabic and it has only been two months in the year. That is NOT chicken feed. Way to go!

I think you actually did quite well and in the grand scheme things it's all about having fun. No guilt! :-)

Zoom-zoom!

Could've been worse and . . you have a project in mind for all of it. Not like you're just wildly buying fabric. And, you've still used a lot of fabric in 2 months!

You're still ahead in the stash busting game. The fabrics are right up my alley and since you have a purpose for them, I'd say enjoy. They sure are pretty.

Vicky, I think you are going backwards with your stash busting. You are supposed to USE fabric, not buy it, lol. However, what you bought is really good for a patriotic quilt. So get busy, remember you have till June 1 to get all of this done. But you didn't say what year, right?

Those new fabrics are lovely -- and really, I mean, you're still 40 some odd yards busted for the year. Don't beat yourself up about it and enjoy the fabrics that are there to help you finish a few other projects (sometimes you need to bring some in to get some out!)

If you find the pattern with yardages for Stars of Provence, please let me know. I, too, missed out on the kit; however, I requested that they sell the pattern on their site. Maybe Fat Quarter Shop will listen!
