Waste Not, Want Not

Cutting up Civil War fat quarters is a ton of fun.

Here's a question for you all. At what point do you throw away the scrap?

After cutting up a fat quarter for basket blocks, nine patches, and both backgrounds and quarter circles for the drunkard's paths, this is what I'm left with.

I can't throw that away! So I figure I can get two 1.5" charms out of it.

Those little slivers of left-over fabric now go in the garbage, NOT the scrap bin!

I've totally used up a fat quarter!! ROFLOL.

I crack myself up sometimes!

Excellent use of the fabric!Don't know if i'd even go as far as the 1.5 in. squares. Maybe i will now! :-)

WTG using up the whole FQ! I would save the 1.5 squares too~ just too cute not to! Love your rotary cutter. :-) Have a happy week!

Definitely you are using up the last scrap size I would keep, lol! I also don't save "strings", i.e. anything less than 1.5" (do I hear a collective gasp from string lovers?)

I would save those 1 1/2" squares, you will need those for a postage stamp quilt!
LOL, the slivers go in the GARBAGE do not even think about saving those!

I used 1 1/2" squares and over probably a three year period made hundreds of nine patch blocks as leader-enders (Bonnie Hunter style). Now I am in the process of making a Single Irish Chain queen sized quilt with nine patch borders. Won't everyone be impressed how diligently I sewed all those little blocks! Actually I never invested any time except to now sew them into the quilt.

I used to save everything! As I've gotten older I find I'm just not using all those scraps, so if I can't get at least a 4 1/2" or larger square, then it goes in the trash.

Fabulous!
Every so often I sit with the scarp basket, rotary, mat and a LG glass of Cab and cut. I have 'collections I am adding to - 1", 1.5", 2" - now, have not checked accuracy after the wine is about half gone...
and no stitched - in my fingers...yet.
Thanks for sharing - I feel so normal now.

I do get tired of saving scraps, but I keep a basket of them, you never know when you need a little piece for an applique and better than cutting into other fabrics.

I'd go with the 1 1/2" squares too...the rest would go into the dog beds that I make for the shelter. They love them.

That is a great job. I think you made appropriate use of those fat quarters.

You are cracking me up too! lol....1.5 inch squares? They are going into your civil war quilt I guess, and it is too cute! Glad to see you excited about sewing again. Love the little baskets! Steady as she goes, huh.

I'd say you can sleep well knowing you haven't wasted any fabric. :-)

Down to the last cuttable scrap I say! Those squares could one day make a scrappy checkerboard border for a mini quilt or the cornerstones for a quilt block.

But I actually liked the pieces you had before you cut it down further. They look like they would have made great one piece "bowties" that could have been appliqued for fun folk art blocks!

I had to read through all the comments to see if anyone else saw what I saw! Vivian and I think alike. I saw bow ties to applique! That would make a cute companion quilt to the baskets!

Have you seen Bonnie Hunter's site? Or her book "Leader's and Enders"? I now will cut fabric into squares as small as 1 1/2 inch for scrap quilts. Am in the middle of making one with 2" squares using the leader/ender method. Surprising how much gets done that way.

I save all of the pieces too...but I just can't get a system together to really organize them in a usable way! You are my hero!

You ladies! I've been trying NOT to think about those bowties!!! I sure don't need another project going here, but wouldn't they be cute? LOL

I think the centre scraps that goes into the bin can make a tiny diamond :) or make them into ticker tape quilt or mini quilt :)

I'm with you...I hate to throw it away if I think I can use it. Sometimes it is a challenge to think of things to do with the leftover scraps from cuts, though I must say you did well having only that left from a fat qtr!

I totally understand.
