No pictures here. Not much commentary about anything except this:
I read a blog this morning that got me to thinking. This blogger asked what kind of blogs her readers liked. I was onboard at that point and started thinking about it. Then she said something that made me step back a bit.
She said she didn't like blogs where folks only gave away stuff (EDIT: Sorry, this was a statement by a commenter, not the blogger), or only showed what they bought and never what they made from that; she wanted to know what kind of job those people had that allowed them to purchase that much fabric; and she wanted to know more about the quilter's life outside of fabric purchases. She didn't like blogs that were only about one thing but liked reading about variety.
Well ....
I tried to keep the blog going in 2010 even when there was absolutely nothing to blog about. Those readers who know me personally, or those who took the time to email me and ask the question, were told what was going on for the last year and a half, but I wasn't free to write about it here. With virtually no sewing happening, and no time to get away to refresh myself, the things I could write about were fabric purchases, the dog, and a few give-aways.
So ....
I'm going to steal the thought (and steel myself for the replies here) and ask you, my readers, what you like and dislike about my blog. Where you would like to see me take it in 2011. Or maybe things I've mentioned about which you would like to know more.
Be honest, but I do have my finger poised over the delete button just in case anyone gets nasty. Ask questions. I'll answer any that I feel are appropriate for a public blog, or you can email me if you want more details.
I keep it real. My life is what it is. Tell me what you think.

I like your blog just as it is. Please don't change a thing and most importantly please don't change because of someone else. Vicky, your blog is always one of the first I read. Honestly. I read that blog post too and after much pondering, I decided to keep blogging as I always had. It is one person's opinion. If other people read my blog than that's great but the true reason why I blog is for myself. Sending you much love as a big fan of your blog.
Oh Vicky, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I feel like our blog posts should represent what's going on in our lives at that point in time, not what we feel like *should* be going on in our lives to keep our readers happy. If you've had to sacrifice your quilting time for other obligations, you shouldn't feel guilty that it's reflected in your blog. I think you've actually gotten a ton of piecework done, even though you allude to this past year as a dry spell. Just keep on keepin' on!!
Geez, how ridiculous! I like your blog just the way it is. You have a ton of readers that are happy, why change for one person.
Keep on blogging!
Now for something important. Are you going to Road to California? LOL!
Vicky, I love that you share your life as much as you are comfortable. I don't think a blog should be written entirely to please others. Just like writing a book, write what you know and love and readers will find you. There are plenty of blogs out there so everyone should be able to find what they want to read. I love your blog just as it is. ILY!
Is your map at the bottom of the blog a list of the people on the site at any one time? There are at least 100 dots right now. If that many people are visiting, why worry? There are enough blogs to suit what anyone wants to read. You should just be yourself. It's not a popularity contest, or is it. That said, I've just started my own blog and although I can say this to you, I wonder about my own blog exactly the same way.
Vicky...this is your blog and you should keep doing it as you want to do it!! We all have our own style and those who like it will come back to follow you. AND I am one of MANY that enjoy reading your blog!!
Hi, I have asked or rather posted a survey about what readers want. The responses I received were mixed. In the end, I made the choice. I realized that if I blogged what I thought people wanted to read or look at...then it was no fun anymore. I decided to blog about what makes me happy, my family, a finished quilt etc. Whatever I want to blog about.
I have noticed recently that there are a few "people" that think that a blogger should show his or her failures or trials and tribulations. Why is that? so they can feel better or less insecure? Well I could off on a super long tangent on all that..but I won't. I guess you are really asking why I read your blog. At first I thought "I don't know, I never really analized it" LOL but then I guess I personally like to see what you buy...what pattern you will put with what fabric. I like to read about your dog and whatever. I think it stems from reading your blog for so long. I feel like I know you, even though I am sure I would never recognize you on the street. In addition to that, I prefer to read quilting and crafting blogs WAY over CNN or something...I look for the positive...because darn it..there is already too much negetive in the world. So I see your blog as a positive on all fronts. Gosh I hope that made sense and not the rambling of an insane quilter LOL
I like your blog. It's been about you. I wouldn't worry what anyone else likes. Are you blogging for someone else or yourself may be the question you need to ask.
Keep posting exactly like you do - your life, your quilting and whatever is going on. That's what everyone reads blogs for. I like your honesty.
Laurie
Well, we all like different things for different reasons so she is free to read the blogs she likes and you are free to write your blog as you like.
I also like to see your fabric choices, pattern choices and how you put your fabrics together for a quilt. You always keep me updated on the lastest fabrics and patterns on the market which I appreciate the time it takes to post all those links to inspire me.
Please don't change!! You can't be everhthing to everybody. I thoroughly enjoy seeing what you buy, as I am 'shopping' from my stash. Mary
I've read your blog for a long time now and have never been bored or bothered by your posts. I like seeing all the new fabric and patterns you buy and in my opinion, it's NObody's business what you buy or how you pay for it. If you want to share it with us, please, go right ahead!
I agree with you--life is what it is. You can only write about what is going on in YOUR life, not someone else's. Go Girl!
I know the blog you referred to and I have to admit, when I read that post, I thought of you. But, now in a bad way! I enjoy reading your posts on the weekend and wish you didn't have to work so you could post more! Your life is what it is-you have a very demanding job and you make enough money to buy lot of wonderful fabric! You don't have a lot of time to quilt, but you do what you can and you obviously love it. I don't see a problem there. It is hard, when you don't have a lot of money, to see others buying tons of the most beautiful fabric, but when I am feeling particulary "wanty", I just know what blogs NOT to look at! Also, my kids and I have had many a laugh over your "stashbusting" efforts the last few years! I LOVE it when you've bought oh, 50 YARDS in a week and have to confess on Judy's blog!
Anyway, I love your blog so keep it coming!
Tricia
Everyone should fill in their blog the way they want to and suits them best. And there are people who don't like that, then they should just stay away.
If I wouldn't like your blog, I wouldn't return each time you have a new post.
Some people think they have the right to make rules. I also read on someone's blog that you HAVE to answer comments. It is nice, but if people choose not to, then that is their choice and should be respected.
Stay the way you are!
Vicky, it is your blog, and you can do what you want. People can subscribe or not according to their tastes.
I can understand the lady's distaste for blogs that just talk about purchases - because then it seems like a sales blog. Besides being boring, it also makes me feel bad about not having more, and I choose to be content with what I have. And we get advertised to enough.
But your blog isn't like that, and you don't have to change a thing.
Vicky,
What do I like about your blog??
YOU!
1. you inspired me to start posting about sunday stash
2. your honest, but not everyone is. it's a choice everyone makes but your honest makes your blog real and i love it.
3. your ups and your downs with fabric. seeing what you buy reminds me that i'm not the only one addicted to fabric and that it's ok sometimes to just buy fabric because.
i could go on and on... but you know how i feel about you. in addition to your blog you always know what to say in comments on my blog and in e-mails to me. at the end of the day this is your space to do whatever you want with. so i say do what makes you happy.
lots of love.
-julie
Wow you have gotten some very good and insightful responses. And I have to agree with everyone. This is YOUR blog about you. If someone does not like what they see, they don't have to read it. I like seeing what other people are doing. I feel like it is girlfriend time, and we are sharing about our lives. So keep on the way your heart leads you. And enjoy the ride.
Vicky - We all follow your blog because we enjoy what you share us and write about. I wouldn't worry too much about that blogger's opionion.
Although I have to say your puppy pictures always bring a little extra smile to my face. But then I am just a big softy for puppy pictures.
I haven't read the comments yet. What I like about your blog is that it's yours. I love that you share your stash reports....they always make me smile. I love your pictures of Penny and really, I just like to come and visit you. An I really, really love all your fabric. :)
Remember, your blog, your rules, period! Anyone who doesn't like it, isn't forced to and doesn't have to read it.
Remember Ricky Nelson's song "Garden Party": "...well you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself..."
P.S....and his brother David the last of the Ozzie and Harriet Nelson family died this week....a reminder that life is too short to sweat the small stuff...
Hey, it's your blog, write what you want. If the reader doesn't like what you are blogging about, they can go read a million other things. Honestly, I live varcaiously through your shopping adventures, I LMAO when you have 3 boxes hitting your door, and if you have the money and no time, then this is what you do, later you'll be broke *vbg* but have the time to sew. It's your life, tell it like you want.
Don't change your blog as I just love it as it is and when you want to blog about something else just do that, but if you don't want to than don't. The thing I really like is seeing you sewing again it makes me happy and that sounds strange for someone you only know by a blog.
I had one time a nasty comment that my english wasn't perfect and that I should stop doing my blogs in english. Well I never listened to that one.
I actually think I know which blog post you are referring to, and I was offended reading it. Your blog is about YOU, what you love, what you feel like talking about, personal or not, and if someone doesn't like it, well heck! Then they just don't have to read it. In our lives, we try so hard to please everyone in or worlds... blogging should be about pleasing yourself! Sometimes I do wayyyy more shopping than quilting and that is just the way it goes when people have JOBS and FAMILY and a life! If you read my blog way back, I think for aobut a year all I did was shop and dream. So you just keep on doing what you feel like doing and don't let anyone else influence you!
Interesting! I also posted a entry on my blog about whether I should keep blogging or not. I began my blog as a journal of my quilting journeys and travels. I thought that I would write what was going on in my life and if others read it, well that would be the "icing on the cake".
However, I began to feel in 2010 that I had lost my original focus for writing for me, something that I had always wanted to do but never did. I had begun to post for my reader. In turn, entires became a chore, what would the "reader" WANT to read or see.
After yesterdays entry, I too received lots of comments that were fabulous! It has given me my insight back and a focus again on what I want to write.
The big lesson yesterday, was just to be "myself"... sounds like we both need to keep doing that! Your blog is great...please don't change a thing and be yourself! We have to remember it's "our journey"...
Hugs,
Elaine in SLO, Ca
I love your blog just the way it is Vicky. I feel like I'm welcome to drop in and visit a friend when a new post goes up. The stash report, I love it. I have boxes and stacks coming in too with out a plan in mind or time to sew, its nice to know other folks love fabric as much as I do. And in the grand scheme of things, doing what we want to please ourselves is not always a bad thing!
I think you should blog what you like to blog and what you feel comfortable blogging. No one should push you to share more than you care to. As far as specific topics, fabric purchasing habits and the like, well, if a person doesn't like the same things you do or doesn't agree with your buying habits or can't understand why you post about your (totally adorable) dog, then they don't need to read it. Would I like to know more about you? Sure, because you sound like such a fun person. But that's totally up to you and your comfort levels. Some people are extremely private, some let it all hang out, and most of us are probably somewhere in between.
I would say keep everything the way it is. Why change for one person. I think it's great to see the posts you put up. I'm not big in sharing my whole life with everyone, so quilting is all I talk about and post about. I do think sometimes if things are going on that you need a few extra people praying for you than that's not bad. If you start to post about how many times you go in and out of the bathroom, I think I would wonder how much more you will be sharing with all of us. This was just a joke, but some people have nothing better to do than pitch a fit. So PLEASE stay the same
You need to just keep doing what you are doing. It is your blog and you can post or not post about whatever you want. If people don't like what they are reading - they should stop reading! It's the same way with television - people complain about shows and their subject matters, but all they have to do is turn the channel. No one is forcing them to read or watch. I really enjoy seeing your projects and progress. Most people go through the same sewing dry spells (definitely myself incuded). Keep on doing what you are doing, and your fans will stay with you.
It's your blog, so why do you worry whether people like it or no? I can tell by the comments that people aren't going to leave you based on what you post or might not post. You are in my list of "original blogs" that I've read since I learned about blogs and all the cool stuff that I can see / learn from blogs. So, don't go changing... I like the doggie pictures (she makes me smile).
Hi
I like your blog, alwalys have, and probably because I like you! Remember I am the non-sewing half of Minick and Simpson, but I am a person who loves all fabric and others that do also, and love to see what is interesting them at this particular time, and love to keep track of "what's hot and what's not" in other parts of the country - hope we meet up this year
Best
Polly
I don't see what's wrong with your blog just the way it is. Every blog is a little different, just like people are all different. It would be so boring if all blogs were alike! Honestly, it's no one's business why you purchase a lot of fabric. I like looking at blogs to see what kinds of quilts everyone is making, that's where I get my ideas for the next quilts I will make and I pick up tips here and there for doing a better job. Also, aren't blogs more for entertainment? I know another Vicki who has a blog that has nothing to do with quilting and someone was very rude to her also. She decorates like you can't believe and that's what she focuses on in her blog. It's just another place to get ideas. But people get jealous and covet another person's life and want to spoil it for someone, if they can't have everything themselves. I'll keep reading your updates....
I am generally a lurker but I had to comment.
I wouldn't worry about this one blogger's comments about a certain type or style of blogs.
You have many followers who likes your blog and your style
My advice would be to only change if you feel there needs to be changes. If you change because of another's opinion, you will not be happy because it's NOT you.
Just my two cents for what it's worth.
I like your blog the way it is. I don't blog (yet) but I follow over 200 in google reader and I have favorites that always get read, like your's and Judy's, Bonnie's, Mary, I love what you all do. I especially love your stash report, I would be afraid to post my incoming last year, I even beat you on purchases and only sewed around 200 yards, I'm in deep overload. Love your dog too, so keep posting like always. Judy(jjkjos@yahoo.com)
That person really wanted some personal information. He/she were kind of nosy wanting to know what kind of job you had to be able to buy that much fabric. What if you were on welfare and just liked charging things on credit. Or what if you did some kind of criminal activity like money laundering ( while you washed your fabrics) or the like. Why should that be anyone's business but your own. Maybe you're just financially responsible and have a lot of disposable income. Maybe you just like fabric more than clothes, make-up, smoking, gambling or groceries. Pwersonally, I do. Anyway, your blog is fine and I really like seeing what you buy and how much of it you have used and your dog, Penny. I wouldn't change a thing.
I discovered quilting blogs about 6 months ago and I am addicted. I admit that seeing the fabric and the projects are my favorite part because it inspires me, gives me new ideas and introduces me to new fabrics that I would never see. It's smiliar to why I am in 3 book clubs, I read books I would never otherwise read. I do also enjoy hearing about peoples lives, sometimes it helps me feel better about myself because someone else out there is the same way. I say stay true to yourself, do what you are comfortable with or it will seem forced. I admire anyone that is willing to put themselves out there and open up to total strangers and take the time to share their craft. I love creative people.
Vicky, your blog was the second blog I discovered almost five years ago and you inspired me to start my blog. You, also, inspired me to start hand applique (ok, you actually shoved me off the fence - LOL)
A blog is a journal about whatever is happening in our world at the moment. I simply don't understand why someone feels the need to criticize what we do with our blogs - it's really mind boggling to me.
You keep doing what you do - it's all good!!!
Hugs!!!
I like your blog just the way it is. Some people are just never satisfied with other's work. I enjoy the pictures of fabric and works in progress, finished things, pictures of pets and family and seeing what the weather is like in other parts of the world. I will keep on looking forward to your blog posts, and thank you for blogging and making me smile.
Don't change a thing! (Unless you want to.) Don't worry about what others like or don't like. Do what makes YOU happy. I get such a kick out of your stash reports, I hope you keep doing them.
I love your honesty. I love your blog. Please don't change it.
Like you
Like Penny
Like seeing your fabric choices/purchases
Like seeing what you make when you have the time
As far as blogging, please yourself mostly! We're along for the ride.
xoxo, LadyB
Hi-
I read your blog daily as well as Nicole's at Sister's Choice and I love both of the equally. Please don't change a thing!
Vicky I wish that there were something new or profound that I could say that would be different from what everyone else has said...I can't...your blog is your blog...it's yours to write and say anything that you want. I don't think anyone should either judge or try to tell you what your blog should be. None of their darn business! I've been a fan of your blog for years...keep writing!
your blog is fine just the way it is. I wouldn't change a thing, let alone think of telling you to change something.
I think getting to read somebody else's blog is a modern day bonus.
your blog should be mainly for yourself to record things that interest you, or that you want to remember. that you are courteous enough to let other people read over your shoulder is a very gracious gesture on your part.
personally, i'm glad you kept posting (especially news of your cute dog!) and really, who am i - or anyone else - to judge on how you spend your hard earned money or how much you spend!??? i like your sunday stash reports...and well, i secretly wish the boxes would come to my house :). you're honest and i think this is a great quality!
i've had some hard times, too, and i didn't post a thing then (because i didn't think i could give my readers anything) - but i missed it badly...so if you feel you have something to share, share it! it's your blog after all!
i deeply hope that 2011 is YOUR year, a happy one with lots of time to let your creativity flow.
hugs from afar,
julia
I love to come to read what your comments are when you post. I don't care if you have made something or not. I love to see pictures of Penny. The person who wrote those things does not have to read your blog or anyone else's blog that she does not like. No one is making her. Don't change you because of her.
I love your blog Vicky. I love seeing the wonderful fabric purchases. I love seeing your cute dog Penny. I love that you are showing your like the rest of us, loving fabric, getting your favs when you can, stitching when time allows and just enjoying being a quilter and sharing that love of quilting with other quilters like me. Keep it up, your blog is perfect like it is.
Vicky,
All I can see is we enjoy the fabrics! Some use them to make the quilts, while others enjoy just growing their stash. You're totally fIne with whatever you'd like to do with your stuff and of course this is your place to log with anything you like. If your readers dont like what they see here, I think thats too bad, as this is your blog! Hope you feel encouraged to keep blogging about your stuff. And if it's ok to say, I like to see Ms. Penny's pic a lot :))) But again, it's totally up to you and we will always enjoy visiting here.
Your blog is YOURS! It should bring you joy. Those who like it will stay, others go elsewhere. That's fine - you attract those who like what you do.
Me, I love hearing about Penny. Like seeing projects in progress, planned, purchased. Keep things as they are. If you want to share more about yourself, I'd like to hear that too - but you should only share what you are comfortable with.
Thanks for sharing with us!
I wonder why, if (s)he doesn't like somebody's blog, (s)he reads it. It's one thing to ask readers what they would like to see on her/his blog and a completely different thing to take the time to tear somebody else's blog apart. How boring would blogs be if everyone followed the self-appointed blog police and only wrote what one reader wanted to read? You have tons of readers and friends on this blog so you must be doing it right for us--and nobody's cuter than Penny and her antics to bring a smile to our faces! Your fabric previews inspire and encourage me so keep on doing what you're doing,
I like your blog! I like reading about Penny, your job, your vacation and anything else you like to share. I live vicariously through your fabric purchases and always like to see when you can de-stress and sew. Don't change for anyone but yourself. You are one in a million and that's why everyone comes back! {{hugs}}
I like your blog the way it is as well. I am one of "those" people that buy fabric and kits and don't have a lot of finishes to show for it. It doesn't bother me any...I consider it my retirement and it will be there for me when I am ready. I am an engineer by trade and quilting is my stress therapy but sometimes I just don't have it in me to sew for awhile. I guess I am sharing this so you don't feel like you are alone!! I think I keep Kimberly at FQS busy as well!!!
Love your blog just as it is-one of the first ones I ever read.
As the ''mom'' of 2 dashies, I love to hear all about Penny and her antics.
I really like your blog. You are natural and funny. Keep on keeping on!
I read the same blog and I have to be honest it took me back a bit. My thoughts are if someone doesn't like the content of my blog then don't read it. That is what I do if I read a blog and after a while I don't care for it I just move on.
Your blog is great. I love seeing pictures of your pretty dog and your fabric purchases. It is no one's business how much or how often you buy, since it is your life and your money.
BTW, we have very similar tatse so if you ever decide you are overwhelmed and need some help stitching just give me a shout. I will be happy to help you sew! :)
Just be you. That's why we come to read. Others maybe wrapped up in themselves but you aren't.
i like that you keep it real - i try to keep it real, too ... i like to tease you about pushing buttons (like the BOLT of cheddar) and sometimes your links "meg" me...
and if people take issue with what you (or i) post, they really don't have to read it, now do they?
I blog as a diary of life. I work, and if someone gets the message that I work and still love to quilt even though I don't have 24 hours a day to quilt I count it good. I'm a real person. Sometimes my kids drive me crazy--- but I still love to quilt. I appreciate fabric for the sheer blessing on looking at it, of feeling of it. I have had a job, and I've lost a job, but I still have quilt wishes that may or may not come true --- that's what quilt books and patterns are for. I'd rather spend money on fabric than bourbon or donuts.... nothing is wrong with either--- it's just my choice. I have more fabric than some and definitely not as much as others. I quilt for myself and I give some things away to share..... Stand by your own beliefs--- they're just that--- your beliefs...
I enjoy your blog very much ~ your blogging inspires me. I read your blog earlier. I was going to quickly respond but then decided to think a little. I'm back & as usual my earlier thought is truly how I still feel about your blog. I like your blog just as it is ~ I'm always happy to see a new post from you & eagerly read it. Please don't change a thing. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that doesn't mean you change because of one opinion.
Vicky,
Your blog is fine just the way it is. Why would you want to turn it into something that suits someone else. It is yours--do what feels good to you! If someone doesn't like your blog/contents then that person doesn't have to read it. Said person can then create their own fantastic, dynamic blog.
On a side note, I'm still going to make it to Ginger's Quilt Shoppe some Thursday or Friday to meet you. Perhaps I've actually already run into you somewhere. How about posting a picture of yourself?
Dont change a thing. If this person doesnt like reading blogs like that then why do they keep reading?????
Love blog hopping
I have some questions for you...
How come nobody worries about "waxy yellow buildup" anymore?
Whatever happened to all those Melmac dishes that were purchased by women in the late 50's and early 60's? You never see them in thrift shops and no one has them around.
Do you think our shoes would last longer if we took bigger steps?
Am I the only one who thinks about stuff like this?
ILY
ROFLOL. Leave it to Jane to ask the REALLY important questions! I'll ponder the answers while I'm *sewing* today!! ILY, kiddo!
I was thinking about what she said about blogs who only post fabric they buy. Her cranky way is one way to look at it but I think of the possibilities and dreams that go into those fabric purchases. I say blog what you like, the reasons I blog are to keep a little diary of my projects but mainly it's to crack myself up. I still giggle when I read posts I wrote at the start of a project (ages ago).
I have my core group of blogs that I read every day as I don't always have time to read all of my links. So that tells you not to change a thing. Truly! Does the person who wrote that scathing remark know how many blogs are out there that she can choose from? If I come across one I like, I link it. If I find one I don't care for, I don't go back. Simple. It's not my place to tell someone what to blog about. So let's get kind here people!! Really!!!
I know the blog you speak of and I don't think she was trying to be mean or scathing. She has her opinions about what is importnat to her and I think she is probably a little insecure about a few things. I don't know her. I am just a lurker who happens to read your blog and hers. I like you both. We all in blogland have different styles and I happen to like variety. If I want to skip to the quilt, I do. If I want to read about the day you guys had, I do. Do what you like. Blog for you, not to keep up with blogland. You started it for you. Keep it for you! :) xox
We all love you and love your blog. DON"T FIX something that isn't broken! You crack me up with your fabric stash, and Penny adds just the right amount of fur. Furry friends are important in a blog because we can all relate to them. Keep doing what you're doing!
Well, being a dog lover myself, and with current craziness in my own life that is not allowing for much quilting time at all, I would have to say that anytime I get to see a cute picture of Penny on your blog, it's a good day! Maybe someday we'll have time to quilt again.....................
in the meantime, keep the "Penny Pics" coming!
Response to My Journey....
I admire your graciousness in trying to explain that blog post. I've read it several times, each time trying my hardest to glean a different meaning of what is written. I cannot. "Mean and scathing" are good words to describe what is there - or at least the part that was still there several hours ago after the comments were closed and a particular link was removed from the sidebar.
I think a lesson can be learned from this. As quilters, we should carefully weigh criticism of others in our blogs before they are posted, and we must remember that not all quilters, skill level, or stashes for that matter, are created equal. Our differences are what make us interesting to visit. Gosh, I sound like a politician, don't I?
Thank you for commenting. Again, you are very gracious.
Vicky
Vicky
love your blog' it was fun to watch penny grow, I buy from the same company but never seem to get them done so i get to see your quilts done. Please don't change
Karina
Hello Vicki. Nicole here. Just to keep it real, I thought I would respond directly to your comment regarding my blog post on Dec. 16, on the subject of the type of blog readers enjoy. My post was not aimed at you or your blog and if you saw yourself in my description of the type of blog I do not care for, I apologize. I do enjoy blogs that allow me to get to know the writer a bit, and contain content that goes beyond a single topic. In particular, I find blogs whose subject matter is primarily concerned with what the writer has purchased tedious and one dimensional. Just to set the record straight, I did not express an opinion of bloggers who do give-aways. You appear to have pulled that out of thin air. Also, in response to your remark about the comments to my post of Dec. 16 being closed, I have always had Typepad set up to close comments after a post is two weeks old. That has nothing at all to do with you and is not a recent development. Removing your link from my sidebar was something that I did do today after reflecting on what one of your commenters said about not reading a blog if the content was not to one’s taste. That being said, I believe that each of us has the right to express our opinions freely and share what we like about our lives and interests. It makes life more interesting to have individuals in the world who are not all the same. Readers have the freedom to read what interests them and skip what does not. I hope you will continue to post on the subjects that are close to your heart and not let my opinion or that of anyone else influence you.
I enjoy your blog! I like to see what all you get and the variety. I do wish that you had the time to do more sewing, but as I know from experience, it doesn't always work out that way.
It makes me wonder though... I thought I know you fairly well for being blog friends, but is there other stuff going on that I don't know about??
I know that there are things that I don't share on my blog. Work stuff that drives me nuts that I don't want to share in case work people read my blog. Nasty experiences with bloggers that I mistook as genuinely nice people but who now seem to still haunt me at ridiculous times. Family crap that goes on, but I can't talk about because it might hurt someone's feelings.
So I think that every blogger has a fine line between what they can and can't share. But the bottom line is THIS is YOUR blog. You should share what you want when you want to. And if people don't like that, no one is forcing them to visit your blog.
And fortunately, you can't keep me away!! :-D
Nichole,
Thank you for coming on and leaving a comment. Although I feel your comment is defensive, I accept your apology on behalf of all those you offended.
I read your blog I think for the first time yesterday. I found it to be quite good, and kept reading down your posts until I got to that one. I did not say that that post was directed at me, but I will say it was extremely mean-spirited, and not the sort of blog I want to continue to read or a blogger with whom I would like to associate or know better. For that reason, I did not leave any comments or attempt to contact you. I commented here on my turf in very general terms because I was astounded that such an obviously talented quilter would take to task so scathingly others who do things differently than she.
What I have thought about, and what I specifically asked my readers, was for input as to any changes they would like to see in my blog. I received the information I wanted through their comments.
Since we will not be communicating any further, I wish you only the best for the future.
Vicky - What an interesting post. I only started reading you a couple of weeks ago after Judy L. said you made busting the fabric stash hysterical. And you've never disappointed me. I like your light writing style; I love your confessions; I enjoy seeing what you bought; I enjoy reading what you post. Frankly, I'm greatly enjoying your blog. So as a new reader, I vote that you just keep going as you've done up till now. I read blogs for fun and information and sometimes learning something - but mostly for sheer enjoyment. And your blog certainly fits the bill for me!
I like your blog just the way it is too... so what if you only show us purchases? As I've said before, I love seeing what you buy because I can't. Someone should get to enjoy it, right? And I love your sense of humor.
I don't know you well enough to email and ask what's going on, but I know that you do what you can, and life often gets in the way!
Well, I have enjoyed reading what you make, reading about your puppy, about your purchases and your give aways. Now of course, I feel I know you and know somewhat of what is going in your life and I am assuming that if someone isn't enjoying reading that, then they move onto a blog that they do like. We blog for ourselves and even if that means no one reads it...it's just for us. You keep plugging along just as you are doing and we followers will keep following.
A lot of people have replied and said what I think - do what you want. But I just want you to know that I read your blog because you make me laugh. I love your humor and your honesty about your stash. Last year was a bear for you but you hung in there through it all. Stay true to yourself. I'll be here no matter what.
I love your blog! I keep up with what is going on at FQS by reading your blog. Saves me time, lol.
I'm a longtime reader - my buddy Ms. Daze was always telling me how funny you were - but I think this is the first time I've left a comment. Here it is - Don't change a thing!
Blogging is about what you want to write about and how much you want to share about your life. I love your quilting adventures and you don't know how many times I've seen something you've bought that I suddenly can't live without! That's what "girlfriends" are for!
I look forward to reading the comments - I hope you're getting the support from the rest of the lurkers who love reading about you and Penny! (I hope you know that as much as I enjoy your blog and you, Penny is my favorite.)
Wow, you got a lot of responses to this. I have actually wondered about you myself and had the thought of "she buys a ton of fabric but I never see what she does with it" Then I just figured it was none of my business....but that is how I roll. I guess I never thought you had some covert operation going on....how much more exciting that thought is! You GO GIRL!
My motto: It's your blog, write what you want.
Gosh! It looks like many have an opinion on this:) My opinion is that it is YOUR blog. You put whatever you want on your blog. Readers have a choice to read, follow, subscribe, unsubscribe for any and all blogs. If I'm not happy with the direction a blog is taking, I don't read it. The blogger still has the right to put whatever they want on their blog. Hope that you are having an absolutely fabulous Sunday. It is finally warming up some here in Atlanta. It's a gorgeous sunny day! Wish it was a sewing day, but...... Maybe tomorrow:)
I understand you cannot blog about everything that is going on in your life. Some things you do not want to share with the world and other things you cannot share with the world because it involves other people which do not choose to have their stuff shared with the world.
So, I think your blog is just fine, whatever you put in it, it's your blog and we will just have to put up with it or just stop reading it if we do not like it..
By the way, I very much like your blogs that have the dog in them.
I think it's a brave thing to put the question out there to the "readership" concerning what types of content they like. It shows that you enjoy connecting with whoever is out there following your blog. I think that you have a nice mix of quilting and personal - just enough really. I think many bloggers (quilters or otherwise) share too much - not to be paranoid necessarily, but one should be careful concerning how much information they put out in the public arena. You share enough that we can get to know your personality, without oversharing. Concerning fabric purchases, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a touch jealous! Being in a spot where I can't really jusitify purchasing even a couple charm packs, it can be hard to see some of the bloggers making huge purchases. But I know that when I'm feeling a little down about things, maybe I just don't visit those blogs just then. It's no one else's fault that money is tight - and what you purchase is your own business and it is fun to see all the wonderful things that land on your doorstep. I know this is getting long, but I read both your blog and the other in question regularly and the other in question also used to be one that featured a very high level of purchasing, so I'm not entirely sure where that paticular criticism is coming from. At the end of it, I concur with the majority here that if you want to blog, talk about what makes you happy. You come across as very genuine - and that more than anything else is likely why you have many followers. The cute dog certainly doesn't hurt either! :)
IMHO, it is YOUR blog and you can blog about anything you'd like! If people don't like what you have to say, they don't need to read anymore.
I absolutely LOVE reading your blog, it always puts a smile on my face to read your stash report. I do wish you'd blog more like you used to, but also understand that you have a life outside blogland. ;0)
The blog author, as I see it, should write whatever they care to share of their lives--and you do, as do so many other wonderful bloggers, all different, all interesting in their own way. Readers are free to read what they like in each blog post. Keep on with what you care to share--and I'll keep reading!
Vicky--I liked it all. Life in general. Penny. The condo people. Recipes. Family. Oh, whatever comes along, I wouldn't change a thing!
My thoughts on that blog post (yup, I saw it too) was that I could agree with some of it, but not all of it.
For instance, I like reading about pets. . .could be that I write about my dog sometimes so it makes me feel like a kindred spirit.
I like reading about stuff that people purchased. . .not that I want to continue buying (since my basement is too full already & I have to trim it down).
I enjoy seeing giveaways, but I've never won one.
But I really like seeing what people have made. . .because I love having the inspiration. .even if it is something that I would not want to make for myself.
The part that I did agree with was the part about the ads; they bother me and I tend to avoid blogs that are heavily "ad-ded".
I enjoy reading your blog because of the pup, and your other ponderings. . .so I agree, you shouldn't change the way you blog unless YOU want to make the change.
Hi Vicky,
I enjoy reading your blog just the way it is!
Why?
1. You are honest
2. You love sharing what fabric/kits/patterns you bought.
3. Even though you have been through some of life's trails you remain cheerful and look on the positive side of life.
4. Your love for Penny and your family comes through your writing loud and clear.
5. You are enthusiastic about quilting and stitching even though you are a busy lady and don't have much time (I can relate, boy can I relate).
6. I chuckle when I read about your recent purchases and your Sunday stash totals as I am also a collector. :-)
7. I smile when I read your blog.
:-)
It's your blog. Write what you want when you want as you are writing for yourself.
We are here as guests and honestly? If we don't like a particlar blog we don't need to keep reading that blog.
Remember, we can't please everyone so we might as well please ourselves and those who enjoy our personalities and humour! :-)
{{{Hugs}}}
Cynthia
mmh.... I skipped around blogs for a while and only bookmarked the ones that interest me. I haven't seen the blog you mentioned, that must tell you something! I don't have pets but I love to read about other people's pets, I love to see the variety of kits etc that you chose.
My "blog" I keep private because there is so much family stuff and my quilting stuff often ends up as a photo at the end!
I love when blogs collide, as yours and Judy's did.
Keep blogging, pl0x!
Vicky, don't let others dictate what makes YOU happy. Your blog is one of my favorites. You offer a lot of inspiration (and I do think The Fat Quarter Shop should send you commission payments!)and I love your puppy! Please don't change.
I like your blog. It gives me hope that maybe I'll figure out how you have the energy to make so many quilts----especially since you work full-time like me!!! Honestly, I teach 3rd grade and when I get home I cook dinner and then sit on the couch till bedtime. I'm so tired I can't even think about walking upstairs to sew and that makes me SO SAD. I'm not doing what I want to do. I'm REALLY hoping you'll tell us in a blog post how you manage to get so much done! Please tell us so we can do it too, Vicki! Keep doing your blog because like I said, you give me hope and I don't even know you (but I'd like to)!!!
I can think of about a half dozen blogs off the top of my head that Nicole could have been referring to, but how interesting that you're the one who picked themselves out of the lineup. You're the first one I'd think of too after reading that.
Since you asked, I quit reading your blog months ago, because after every post I read, I'd ask myself, does this woman ever sew anything? Unlike Nicole however, I actually prefer a blog that sticks mostly to quilting (and not just buying fabric). That's what *I* like. I'm really not interested in shopping trips to Walmart or vacations to Alaska or cute stories about the family pet or whatever.
It would have been so easy for you to have simply ignored what Nicole wrote and chalked it up to personal preference, but you chose to make a political correctness issue about it, and it was so unnecessary. Franky, you're the only one who sounds defensive here.
With the thousands of blogs out there to read, there is something for everyone, and no one blog is going to please everyone, including yours. So why bother?
Now let's see if you publish this along with the other 92 slobbering comments you got.
Surprise, surprise, "ANONYMOUS," your comment will remain. Very "brave" of you not to sign your name nor include your contact information. But contrary to your comment, my blog post was not defensive. I did not think she was talking about me as she doesn't know me. I was simply making the point that being mean-spirited to those who do things differently, those who might have other things come up that are more important than sewing, sad things, life and death matters, shouldn't be judged and made fun of the way she did. I'm sure your friend appreciate your input, for coming to her defense, and for helping her crawl out of the uncomfortable position in which she found herself. Your comment will remain - to show others just how quickly hatefulness spreads among unhappy people. I hope you feel better now that you've had your say.
Gosh! As you may assume, I'm catching up with you and what's going on in your world, and it seems I've stumbled on a bit of controversy! For what it's worth, your blog was one of the first I ever followed (back when it was called stalking instead of "following"--LOL!). And although my blog reading has been cut WAAAY back, yours is still one of the first blogs I read when I have time to blog surf a bit. I think you have a busy and demanding job and probably not as much time to do "bloggable" things as you'd like, so the content is what it is. I say write about what you want. It's a blog, not an autobiography.
