Hand applique thread question

I'd like to know your favorite hand applique thread. And your second favorite. And your least favorite.

Any help or comments will be appreciated!

Thanks!!

I can only give you the names of the products I can buy in Germany.
It depends how I applique. Using Buttenhole stich I use a embroidery thread in a matching colour.
Using needleturn with a freezer paper template I use 1. YLI Silk thread in a light colour 2. a cotton thread I used to buy at Miller's Quilting, but they don't have it in the shop anymore 3. any other cotton thread I have at home.

I use (are you sitting?) polyester for needleturn. I find it slides well and is a lot thinner than cotton. Can't afford the silk, but would love to try it.

I like the silk but I tend to use Mettler most often because I happen to have a nice color range and can better match the thread to the applique piece. When I do use silk, though, I like YLI. I tried another brand--can't tell you which it was because I don't remember--and it broke quite a lot.

I've been using Mettler as I like the range of colors, also. I've had suggestions from others to try DMC floss (talk about a range of colors!) but so far it's been just Mettler.

p.s. NOT the floss. you know what kind i'm talking bout, right vicky? the machine embroidery kind. hard to find (none local for me) but definitely worth it, IMHO.

Well, this is a good question! Currently I am using silk. Gutterman in colors that I've picked up, and also the much finer YLI. But when I've used all that up I'm switching to DMC machine embroidery thread. I have collected all the colors available over the last several years, and have loved it the little bit I've used it. It is really hard to find.

I like mettler.

I did not like silk - it did not "hold" my applique pieces - I was always tuggiong to keep it taught to the background....

I love YLI silk thread for hand applique. But if I don't have it I like the mettler silk finish. I have a nice selection of colors I bought when my LQS went out of business a few years ago so can usually find a color that will work.

I do a lot of applique work, and often on miniatures, and I like silk best of all. If I can't get silk I use Mettler Silk Finish. My least favourite is Gutermann (sp) cotton as it seems to tangle more.
Hope this helps.

My comment is late but I'm leaving it anyway. I like silk in a brand that has "TIRE" on the end of the spool so I suppose that is the brand name. I have some YLI also but it's very fine and I prefer the TIRE thread. I'm hand piecing my GFG with silk and the stitches don't show.
I'm also missing RIM again this year. It always is on a weekend that has scheduling conflicts for me and I can't get there. Maybe one day we both can attend and meet IRL.
